PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Ayodamola Okunseinde of Dissident Display has been asked to participate in the "Invitation Helsinki" program. The program allows him a 1 week sojourn to Helsinki, Finland for the purposes of making video art and documentary.
The City of Helsinki and the Finnish Embassy in Washington, D.C. are pleased to present Helsinki in Washington throughout May 2009 with an Embassy exhibition and a series of special events.
The concept of Helsinki’s presentation is titled “Invitation to Helsinki.” We will be inviting people of Washington to visit Helsinki, to explore the best of Helsinki and to bring their experience back home.
We have selected talented people from Washington with their counterparts in Helsinki, providing them with opportunities to interact on both professional and personal levels. We strongly believe that there are areas of common interest and grand ideas to share between Washingtonians and Helsinkians for mutual advancement to help build a better future.
12 people from Washington, 12 stories about Helsinki
In the month-long Helsinki presentation at the Finnish Embassy, Helsinki will be presented through the eyes of 12 individuals from the Washington, D.C. area. They will have experienced Helsinki in person in the early spring of 2009. Their stories will be turned into a “My Helsinki” exhibition produced by the University Of Art And Design Helsinki and to be on display at the Finnish Embassy in Washington, to create a unique encounter between the two cities.
Special events:
Seminars and meetings will be organized throughout May 2009 for networking and exchange between leading experts from Helsinki and Washington. Helsinki will be presenting the city’s vibrant cultural life, through its love for the arts and entertainment. We have also confirmed a May Pecha Kucha around the Helsinki travelers that will take place at the Finnish Embassy
PROJECT DETAILS
Lights, Camera, Helsinki: Helsinkiscape is a 60-minute multimedia cityscape that aims to capture the feel of the “Invitation Helsinki” experience. The piece would fuse audio/video samples, photography and stimulating editing to create an environmental audio/video tapestry of the city.
The following instrumentality would be utilized in collecting and processing materials for the cityscape
Audio Sampling: found sounds, conversations, city sounds and composed sounds would be captured via a series of audio recording devices and processed as the narrative audio component of “cityscape”
Video Sampling: found video, interviews, city scenes and stock video would be used in the development of the visual foundation of the project.
Photography: Stock and captured photographs would add to the visual texture of the final cityscape
Editing: The documentary will be edited in an artistically energetic fashion, similar to the video art work samples attached.
Lights, Camera, Helsinki: Interviews from Helsinki is a 60-minute documentary on the contemporary art experience in Helsinki. It will feature and document emerging/established artists, curators, buyers, events and galleries. While exploring issues of culture, tradition, perception, practice and method, the aim of the project is to arrive at a snapshot of contemporary arts that is uniquely Helsinki in expression.
The methodology will be to compile a series of interviews (6-8min each) and pods (2-4min each), into a documentary containing a combination of 8-10 interview and pod segments totaling 60 minutes in duration.
Interviews: one-on-one interviews of narrative content
Pods: non-interview abstracts of narrative content
The style of the documentary will be mainly of an educational/narrative nature. It will be made in sections for ease of production and dissemination. All genres of contemporary art are open for consideration. A range from emerging to established artists, collectors and galleries would be considered. Additionally the perspective of the layperson may be introduced by interviews with gallery patrons. The documentary will be edited in an artistically energetic fashion, similar to that of my current television show and online video magazine SCENE: a video magazine on the arts (www.dissidentdisplay.com/scene)
